Christmas Crafts: Poinsettia Holiday Card

Handstamped Paper Poinsettia Christmas Card

Wouldn't it be fun to send everyone a Christmas Poinsettia this year? Well, now you can and it's guaranteed to still be in glorious bloom when it gets there!

Before I continue, I'd like to thank (& credit) Linda Fisher for providing the inspiration and (unbeknown to her) the challenge to use Stampin' Up! decorative punches to create this paper Poinsettia. (She felt it couldn't be done and that sounds like a creative challenge if I ever heard one. Hee!  Actually, I think she was mostly worried about proportion, but I solved that for my card.)

The card design is quite simple, with a Cherry Cobbler base and a Whisper White center panel layered onto Garden Green with a Whisper White Scallop Trim Border.

Stampin' Up! Build a Blossom and Fabulous Florets Stamp Sets

The greenery, stamped in Garden Green ink, is the stem and leaves image from the Fabulous Florets stamp set. I inked just the leaves to stamp it near the top of the panel, then inked the entire stamp and stamped again positioning the stamp near the bottom of the panel. (This expands the greenery image to accommodate the size of the Poinsettia.) In addition, I stamped a few single leaves, filling in a few areas, allowing them to peek out from behind the flower.

Now for the fun part! The flower petals were created using the Blossom Petals Builder punch along with the Build a Blossom stamp set.

HIP TIP: Punch first and then stamp. Doing this allows you to use scraps to punch from and you won't waste precious card stock.

Creating a Paper Poinsettia with Stampin' Up! Punches

The petals were given shape by "cupping" them and slightly bending the tips. To assemble, the petals were glued to a small circle of card stock in a spiral pattern. The two layers (8 petals each) were attached using Stampin' Dimensionals to give the flower lots of texture and dimension. Three small Basic Pearls in the center complete the flower.

The greeting, from the Four the Holidays stamp set, was stamped using Cherry Cobbler ink on a Whisper White banner with the ends "flagged".

For a more in-depth look and a few tips on creating this beautiful paper Poinsettia, please check back tomorrow. I'll be posting more photos and the steps to create this traditional Christmas flower.
