Cool Masking Technique

Check out this cool masking technique, presented* at our last Stampin' Up! team meeting and swap. And if you think it looks complicated ... fear not! It's actually very easy to do. You can try this out at home with any shape created with a punch or die.

*Technique presented by Debbie M.; card by Doreen F.

To create the mask, die-cut a shape (we used the Beautiful Butterflies Bigz Die) from a piece of Stampin' Up! Window Sheets. (You could also use plain copy paper, but window sheets are sturdier and will allow you to save the mask and reuse it over and over again on future projects.)

Reserve the die-cut butterfly for another project. Use the remaining "negative image" as your mask. (You are basically creating your own custom stencil!)  Place the mask over a piece of card stock. Sponge on color to fill the entire shape opening. For this project, we used Bashful Blue, Daffodil Delight, and Pumpkin Pie.

HIP TIP: Use a temporary adhesive such as Dotto or 2-Way Glue to secure the card stock to your work surface. Likewise, use it on the corners of the mask to keep it in place while stamping.

Leaving the mask in place, stamp any image onto the sponged area using Jet Black StazOn ink. Using a stamp slightly larger than the sponged area will produce the desired effect for this technique. We used the long stem image from the Fabulous Florets stamp set and stamped it twice (side by side). Allow to dry before removing the mask to avoid smudging. Attach image to project as desired.

Isn't this neat? I can't wait to create something totally different using the same technique! Now it's YOUR turn ... give this technique a try and let me know what you create!
