Remembering Our Heroes

Patriotic Greeting Card Remembering Military Heroes

Instead of waiting until Monday, I decided today would be a good day for a Memorial Day message (after an inspirational nudge from the incredible Stephanie Howell) as we head into the long weekend.

It's easy to forget what this holiday is really about. Sure, it's a three-day weekend. Yes, it's a great time to fire up the BBQ, go camping, snag a bargain, hang out with family and friends. But that isn't what this holiday is about.

Will you remember?

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving our country.

In the early days it was called Decoration Day and it commemorated the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. It was later extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars.

On Memorial Day the flag is flown at half staff until noon. It is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then slowly lowered to the half-staff position. At noon it is raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.
"The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all."

source: Home of Heroes via Wikipedia

This weekend I'll be remembering that the reason we can even hold parties and BBQ's, swim, shop, camp and generally hang out having a good time, is because of the sacrifices our military heroes (and their families) have made and continue to make every day.

Thank you to our brave service men and women, past and present.

This weekend I'll be remembering. And I'll be grateful.

Will you remember?

p.s. Have a fun and safe weekend whatever your plans may be!

Quick + Easy Treat Box (From the Archives)

"For You" Treat Box Filled With Wrapped Chocolate Candy

One of my favorite Big Shot Dies, the Box #2 Bigz XL Die, is retiring and I'm taking a walk down memory lane with this adorable project from last year. Creating this box is a snap - just one zip through the Big Shot does it all - the die scores and cuts the box pattern for you! All that's left to do is fold the box into shape and decorate as desired. So EASY!!

Adhesive die-cut accents are used for quick embellishments

Wondering about the embellishments? This was a fun choice from the 2011 Sale-a-bration product offering that was also a personal favorite.

 **Bargain Alert!!**

I just came from the online clearance rack where I spotted the Ice Cream Parlor Suite of accessories on sale now.

For quick and easy treats for the box, simply wrap a few chocolate nugget candy bars with strips of Designer Series Paper and add a die-cut flower accent. Super easy to do and people LOVE these little decorated treats.

Gift Set - Embellished treat box, wrapped candy, and 3x3 mini card

I also created a coordinating 3x3 mini card using the same paper and die-cuts. This adorable little ensemble makes a great gift for a friend, co-worker, teacher, or neighbor.

Fox & Friends Mini Card Set

Mini 3x3 Card Set and Box With Fox & Friends Stamp Set by Stampin' Up!

This adorable set of 3x3 Mini Cards can be used in a variety of ways or would also make a cute gift for a busy Mom. A few clever uses might include:
  • Gift cards for children's birthday gifts
  • Children's thank you cards
  • Quick notes to tuck in children's lunches
  • Special reward card for an accomplishment
I'm sure you can imagine even more uses for these mini cards featuring the Fox & Friends stamp set. Although I adore that cute monkey, all of the animal friends are just as charming and I couldn't resist creating a set of cards with them.

Color coordinated set of animal cards for children

Each animal image is color coordinated with the background piece which was embossed using the Backgrounds 1 Texturz Plates and trimmed with a scallop border.

Simple dry embossing and paper-piercing add charm to mini cards

The images were simply stamped on card stock and cropped with a circle punch. For added interest and texture, I paper-pierced following the circle border.

A mini set of cards needs a holder or box, so I created a very simple open box and embellished it with a few coordinating details. The die-cut frame was created using the Lots of Tags Sizzlits Die Set - a must have set of tags you will use over and over again.

Embellished Box for Mini Handmade Childrens Cards

The box is roughly 3-1/4" x 2" and is just the right size to hold all seven mini cards plus seven mini envelopes. It makes a darling display and the cards are ready to use - simply write the appropriate message inside.

Like this project? The Fox & Friends stamp set will be retiring soon - order it now while you can! For another fun idea using this stamp set, check out my Monkey-ing Around Birthday Card.

Anniversary Card With Stampin' Up! Always Elegant Stamp Set

Today is a special day ... my (our) ninth wedding anniversary!

Nine years with my best friend by my side through everything ... good or bad (mostly good), ups and downs (mostly ups) and lots of unknowns. Nine years of support that I'd never experienced before. Nine years spent with someone who "gets" me and knows me all too well ... and loves me anyway! ;)  Nine years of opportunities and experiences that I would never have known if it weren't for him.

Nine great years of knowing ...

THIS is my place.

My Home.

My Rock.

Today is a special day. And I'm a really, really lucky girl.

Love you honey!

Simply the Best Wishes

Simple and elegant Best Wishes Greeting Card

This simple "best wishes" greeting card will charm its recipient with a few special touches that are easy to duplicate. The white lace doily is clipped from the Flirtatious Specialty Designer Series Paper collection which features two 12x12 sheets of laser-cut doilies. There are several designs to choose from and they are double-sided: white on one side and either Melon Mambo or Pumpkin Pie on the other. Simply clip the desired doily from the sheet and adhere to your project. I love the simplicity!

In the center, layered flowers are the star of the show. The delicate flower stamp from the Hostess exclusive Posy Punch stamp set was inked with VersaMark followed by Riding Hood Red and stamped on Blushing Bride card stock before being clear embossed. Cropping this posy is a breeze with the coordinating Fancy Flower Punch. Underneath are two flowers cropped with the same punch from Riding Hood Red card stock; crumpled and distressed.

Best Wishes Greeting Card Embossed Details

The greeting, from the long popular Sincere Salutations stamp set, is heat embossed using black embossing powder which looks so classy on the Basic Gray card stock. Tying it all together is Basic Gray Satin Ribbon.  I love the look of satin ribbon on elegant cards - wedding, anniversary, sympathy, birthday - plus, satin is so easy to work with.

Did you notice? Today's simple card used a minimum of supplies and tools, but looks sophisticated just the same. That's a real bonus for those new to card making as well as the busy stamper. Does that describe you? I'd love to know if you prefer quick and easy card making ideas when you search online. Please let me know in the comments below.

Flores Suaves Sympathy Card

Spanish Stamp Set - Flores Suaves - by Stampin' Up!

Today's card features the beautiful Flores Suaves stamp set from celebrando creatividad, Stampin' Up!'s Spanish language supplemental catalog. The set features stunning line-art images plus a script background stamp in a really lovely font.  The gorgeous sample card (featured on page 5) was just too inviting to pass up. I changed the card base color from Old Olive to Rich Razzleberry but other than that I totally cased their card!

Delicate butterflies (mariposa) accented with pearls and pearlized accent ink

The tone on tone textures make this card a WOW - textured card stock for the base, the clear embossed script, and lace ribbon borders - providing a beautiful background for the butterflies. I accented the butterflies with Basic Pearls and Smooch Pearlized Accent Ink.

Elegant rose from Flores Suaves Stamp Set is stamped inside the card

Inside the card I added a Whisper White layer stamped with the rose in Rich Razzleberry. It's a beautiful card in person  - thank you Stampin' Up! for the fabulous inspiration.

Happy Retirement Masculine Card

Happy Retirement Masculine Themed Card

Our theme this month for the team shoebox swap was Masculine Cards. I assumed, given the time of year, there would be lots of Father's Day cards. And since I like to be different (hehe), I thought I'd make my card a "happy retirement" card.

You know ... in honor of all those poor rubber stamps that Stampin' Up! is retiring this month. Sniff sniff.

Studio Sketches Stamp Set Image with Watercoloring

I chose the Studio Sketches stamp set and watercolored it using an Aqua Painter and Classic ink pads.  After cropping the image with a circle punch, I sponged the edges lightly. The patterned paper is from the Well Worn Designer Series Paper collection - a must have for masculine cards and projects. (Get it HERE before it's gone.)  The Blue Denim Jean Ribbon coordinates perfectly and adds to the "manly" theme.

The "happy retirement" sentiment is from the Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set, which also includes happy birthday, happy father's day, happy graduation, and get well, just to name a few suitable for masculine cards.

Retirement Reminder: The last day to order retiring stamps and accessories is May 31, 2012. Retiring accessories are only available while supplies last and some items are already sold out. Check the list of accessories HERE.  Items with an "X" in the far right column are sold out.

Wedding Sweet Congrats

Bright Embossed Wedding Congratulations Card

One of my favorite wedding themed stamp sets by Stampin' Up! is Wedding Sweet. It is simple, yet elegant and is also quite versatile. Use it to create your own wedding stationery, including invitations, save the date, RSVP, and thank you cards. It also makes beautiful shower invitations, favors, and decorations. Last, but not least, is a message of congratulations for the happy occasion.

Brightly Colored Modern Floral Spray Wedding Card

While it looks beautiful in a single color, multiple colors are possible by using Stampin' Write Markers to ink the rubber stamp. For added gloss and texture, try heat embossing the image using one or two colors of embossing powders, as I have done here using Melon Mambo and Wild Wasabi.

Classic Pink and Black Embossed Thank You Card

Another version - clear embossed on Basic Black - is classy and elegant. This one is from the archives and was custom created for a client in her wedding colors.

Retirement Alert!  The Wedding Sweet stamp set and the 5/8" Satin Ribbon are both on the retiring list. Order these items before May 31, 2012 (while supplies last).

Mother's Day Mini Card & Scallop Envelope

Handmade die-cut scallop envelope and matching mini card

I find it totally fascinating what you can create with rubber stamps, ink, card stock, and a few embellishments. I suppose that is what pulls us to papercrafting in the first place and keeps us coming back for more year after year. This little mini card and envelope are a prime example. I LOVE how this turned out and couldn't wait to share it with you!

Embellished Stampin' Up! Die-Cut Scallop Envelope

The mini envelope is easily created with the Stampin' Up! Scallop Envelope Die and the Big Shot. Then the real fun begins. I embellished the scallop envelope using the Creative Elements stamp set, patterned paper, crochet trim, pearls, and seam binding ribbon.

Scallop Envelope with embossing detail, ribbon and crochet trim

I searched high and low through my rubber stamps for one that simply said "mom", but came up empty handed. Not to worry ... I created my own!  Using the word "from" in the Fabulous Phrases stamp set, I used a Stampin' Write Marker to ink the letters "om" and stamped them on Very Vanilla card stock. I cleaned the stamp and inked again, this time only inking the letter "m" and stamped it right next to other two letters. I used the new Adorning Accents Textured Impressions Embossing Folder to emboss the tiny hearts above and below "mom". I cropped it using the Small Oval Punch and sponged around the edges. Ta-Da!

Scallop Envelope Interior and Hand Stamped Enclosure Card

For the mini card inside, I simply used the same delicate flourish for the background, added the butterfly and the "happy mother's day" greeting from the Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set. There is still room to write a short message and/or signature.

I'm calling this a mini card, but the proper name is more likely a "gift enclosure card". Whatever you choose to call it, I think it will make a lovely addition to any gift and will be a treasured keepsake. I think it would be terrific along with flowers or a plant, as opposed to one of those generic cards in a small plain envelope. Are you with me on this one?

Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

It's Your Day, Mom!

Paper Pieced Quilt Look Mother's Day Card

Mother's Day seems like the perfect occasion to create a quilt-look card. And for the patterned paper? Why, Flirtatious, of course! All those pretty doily patterns were begging to go on this card. ;)

This is a great way to use up those bits and scraps of paper. I adhered them to a piece of white card stock and then die-cut the shape with the Top Note Die in the Big Shot. The Square Lattice Embossing Folder gives it rich texture that really adds to the quilted look.

Mother's Day Card Sentiment - It's Your Day

The sentiment, from the It's Your Day stamp set, works well for several occasions including Mother's Day. I added a tiny punched flower using the Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack. (Yes, again. It's become one of my go-to tools for a quick and easy embellishment that always coordinates with my project!)

So ... are you still working on Mother's Day projects or are you done? I have an adorable little creation for Mom that I'll be sharing tomorrow. You won't want to miss it!
