Convention Bound - SLC or Bust!

Woo Hoo ... Look what just arrived in the mail ...

Name Badge for Stampin' Up! Convention 2012

My official Stampin' Up! Convention 2012 credentials! Yippee!!

It's pretty exciting during the registration period checking out the agenda, choosing classes, and learning more about other events including the ever popular make & takes. But because we register months in advance, that initial excitement wears off just a bit.

Until that lovely packet from Stampin' Up! arrives in your mail box! Of course, this also means that convention is right around the corner. Eek! Where in the world has the month of June gone? Time to give the convention prep work a kick in the pants and get it in high gear.

I'm hightailin' it over to my craft table to check on swaps ...

Celebrating The Red, White & Blue

Celebrate Today Handmade Card w/Red, White & Blue

Gearing up for the 4th of July? This fun and festive card will get things rolling.  I wanted a clean and simple look to show off the banners and this turned out perfectly. It gets bonus points for being quick to create too.

The "Celebrate Today" sentiment from the Perfectly Penned Stamp Set sets off the look and feel of this card beautifully.

The banner flags are varying lengths and widths, with the Navy flags getting special treatment along the bottom edge via the Finishing Touches Edgelits. The White flag was texturized using the Fancy Fan Embossing FolderI love the new Fancy Fan folder - great pattern!

Unique ribbon detail and embossing add interest and texture

A word about that polka dot paper: YIPPEE!! I always end up using all the polka dot prints from any patterned papers I get. And wishing there was more. Well, wishes do come true. Introducing Polka Dot Parade Designer Series Paper in SIX basic colors all in one package. As always, these patterned papers are double sided, with a larger dotted circle pattern on the flip side. Anyone else doing a happy dance over this?

The Denim Jean Ribbon was the clear winner for this card along with a snippet of Real Red narrow Taffeta (with white trimmed edges). This is a great way to use up those little bits of ribbon left over from other projects or at the end of a spool. Real Red Brads hold the ribbon in place.

Review: New Stampin' Up! Firm Foam Ink Pads

Improved Stampin' Up! Ink Pads with Firm Foam Pad

After a few weeks of using the new Firm Foam Ink Pads from Stampin' Up! I'm ready to officially declare these ink pads a winner. The new ink pads were introduced with the debut of the Stampin' Up! Annual Catalog on June 1, although demonstrators were able to order them early.

I purchased the new In Color pads and what a difference! Now, as I switch between the old style felt pads and the Firm Foam, it's like night and day. With the felt pads, it was necessary to really work to ink a stamp properly - especially with a larger solid stamp. The best method for achieving a well inked stamp on the felt pads was to twist the stamp on the pad a couple of times (applying a fair amount of pressure) then tap, tap, tap and stamp. This could still result in blotchy looking images.

The new Firm Foam pads are really juicy and you will not want to do any twisting or mashing! In fact, the best method is to very lightly tap, tap the stamp on the pad and stamp the project. You need not apply pressure when inking the stamp and, in fact, doing so may result in excessive ink on the stamp and/or your block.

A few other things I like about the new pads:
  • No "dip" in the center of the pad - the pad will stay nice and flat and won't dip or become "wavy".
  • Color coded labels included with each ink pad - in four languages - for easy identification.
  • A new glossy label on the top of the pad that won't fade or chip off.
  • The ink has an increased opacity for nice solid images and dries quickly.

Open ink pads with color coded labels for easy color identification

HIP TIP: Use the extra labels! I cut the ends off of one extra label and placed them on the inside of the pad. In doing so, with two or more open ink pads sitting side by side, I can easily tell which color is which. Have you almost (or actually) put a stamp in the wrong color pad? Yikes!

I'll be switching over to the new Firm Foam Pads - most likely one color collection at a time. Stampin' Up! offers the pads individually ($5.95 each) or in a bundle by color collection ($49.95/$39.95 for Neutrals) saving about 16%.

Shannon West of Stampin' Up! gives us a great side by side stamping comparison plus tips regarding the new Firm Foam pads ...

Please note - The following ink colors were re-formulated for use with the new ink pads: Basic Black, Basic Gray, Perfect Plum, Tempting Turquoise, and Marina Mist. Therefore, new ink refills should be purchased for these five colors and the older refills can be discarded or used for other projects.

I hope you enjoyed this review of the new Stampin' Up! Firm Foam Ink Pads. Please let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

Summer Silhouettes + Gratitude

Summer Silhouettes Thank You Card

My little yay for summer flower fest this week gave me a chance to play around with the brand new Summer Silhouettes stamp set from Stampin' Up!  This set jumped out at me when I first saw it. It has some really pretty and unique images and has tons of design possibilities. Now that I've had a chance to play around with it, I think it's a really fun set - maybe a little addicting. Once you start layering the images to create your virtual flower garden, it kind of takes on a life of it's own!

The die-cut shapes used here are the Labels Collection Framelits, which allow for exact placement around a stamped image. The middle label shape is actually the same size as the focal image, but cut in half and spread out to peek above and below the main piece.

Summer Silhouettes Gratitude Card

I'm loving that border stamp - such a cool design! I clear embossed it after stamping the image in Midnight Muse, one of the great new In Colors.

Thanks to our soggy weather around Stampingville, I have NO summer sun to enjoy. boo + hiss  Thank goodness my favorite hobby in the entire world is stamping & paper crafting. Rain or shine, my stamps and paper are ready to play!

Easy Events Favor Bag

Party Favor Bag for gifts or treats

Here's a cute and quick idea for a party favor bag. These can be used for bridal showers, baby showers, or birthday party favors and are easy to coordinate with party colors or themes.

Thank You image from Easy Events Stamp Set

The I'm happy it's summer flower fest continues with the whimsical little flowers from the Easy Events stamp set by Stampin' Up! I simply stamped the same image three times side by side before adding a quick dab of watercoloring with an Aqua Painter. I punched a few tiny flowers using the Itty Bitty Shapes Punch pack to add some dimension, plus bling in the way of Basic Rhinestone Jewels. The "plain" flowers got a drop of Dazzling Details for their own bit of sparkle.

Small paper bag sandwiched between stamped and decorated card stock panels

The front and back panels are simply adhered to the paper bag using Sticky Strip. I prefer Sticky Strip in our humidity - I don't want these falling apart all over the place!

A wide oval punch creates openings used for handles

The paper bag was trimmed across the top to provide a straight edge for the Scallop Edge Border Punch. The handle openings are created using the Extra Large Oval Punch.

Happy Summer + New Digital Downloads

Summer Sun Two Page 8x8 Digital Designer Template

Happy first day of Summer! This cute 8x8 digital page seemed perfect for today. Note the sweet florals for my week long flower fest to celebrate the start of summer.  The Summer Sun Designer Template was released by Stampin' Up! in May, but it's still available (their digital products never retire!) and it's great for quickly scrapping a few summer fun photos. The template includes two pre-designed pages, plus all the elements can be used separately on other projects.

New digital products from Stampin' Up! this week include everything from simple + quick greeting cards to super trendy digitape in all the current In Colors to a complete party kit for your rocket loving little ones.  Here's a sneak peek:

Digital Downloads from Stampin' Up! released June 19, 2012

I'm loving that Spring themed kit too - so pretty and lots of elements to play with. Don't let the name fool you - these elements will work on Summer themed pages and projects too.  Get all the details on this week's digital downloads here.

Off to tend my flowers. On paper that is ;)
Hope your day is a bright one!

Thinking of You Card With Dyed Paper Daisies

Thinking of You card with dyed paper daisy

Hi Friends! This Thinking of You card combines two new Stampin' Up! products with a returning favorite plus several quick and fun techniques.

Yesterday I mentioned I'd be featuring flowers this week in honor of Summer's official arrival. Today's card features a perennial favorite: Paper Daisies. No groaning over the pun please and thank you.

You may be thinking: "Wait. Aren't those Paper Daisies plain white in the catalog?" Well yes they are, but guess what? Did you know you can stamp them, dye them, heat emboss, dry emboss, and like probably 50 other things? Well now, doesn't that sound like crafty fun!!

To recreate this flower you'll need 5 flowers of the same size - using the second smallest size in the package. Lay one flower flat on your work surface. Add a drop of liquid glue to the center (about the size of a pencil eraser). Fold each of the remaining four flowers in half and then in half again. Place each quartered flower on your base flower with the point in the middle in the glue. Allow to dry a few minutes.

HIP TIP: Use this technique with any size flower. The bigger the flower base, the more folded flowers you'll need.

Dimensional flower created from delicate paper daisies

Flowers need water, so let's give it a bath! A dye bath that is. In a small, empty container with a lid, pour in about one teaspoon of rubbing alcohol (water works too). Add a few drops of Riding Hood Red reinker, and swirl gently to mix. Fluff your flower a bit, then drop it in the dye bath. Put the lid on and swirl and shake until the entire flower is wet. Pluck your flower from the container (maybe use tweezers) and set on paper towels to dry. Speed drying time by using a Heat Tool. Adhere paper flowers to your projects using Glue Dots.

HIP TIP: Create any color flower using this method and ink pad refill bottles. Add more or less drops of ink to vary the color intensity. Really short on time? This flower looks gorgeous in white too!

Note: Thanks to Stampin' Up! for both of these cool ideas which were featured in the July issue of Stampin' Success, our exclusive magazine for demonstrators full of tips, tricks, great feature articles and fabulous project ideas. Get yours now by joining!
(Oh, and free products too.) Find out how here.

Dry embossed chevron pattern inked using a brayer

One more quick technique: Brayered Chevron pattern. Thanks to the new Chevron Embossing Folder, creating this look only takes a minute or two. Simply emboss card stock using the folder as usual, then lay it on a smooth, flat work surface. Next, ink up a brayer and roll it across the card stock. I used Crumb Cake ink on Crumb Cake card stock for a subtle tone on tone look. It still makes the Chevron pattern pop! For more dramatic results, use a contrasting color of ink when brayering.

Did you notice the contrasting zig-zag trim? Created in seconds with the new Finishing Touches Edgelits and the Big Shot.

Like one of these techniques? Have a question? I love to read your comments! Hello? tap ... tap ... is this thing on?

So Kind Blossom

Yippee! Summer officially begins on Wednesday, so I've decided to celebrate by featuring flowers this week - and not just any ol' flowers. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve, so be sure to check back all week long!

So Kind of You Greeting Card

Today's thank you card is clean and simple and can be created very quickly. This would be a great card to make several of to have ready to go.

The Patio Party Designer Series Paper gets a playful cut with the new Large Scallop Edgelit (in the Big Shot). The Scallop Dots Ribbon (notice a theme yet?) is edged with pin-holed scallops - a cute extra detail - and is printed with polka dots on one side while the other side is solid. It's like two ribbons in one - a real plus for stretching those supplies.

Blossom Punch Flower

The pretty flower starts with the Blossom Punch; in the center is the largest flower from the Boho Blossoms Punch topped off with one of the new In Color Dahlia Adornments in Summer Starfruit.

HIP TIP: Attach these Dahlia embellishments using Mini Glue Dots or a drop of Crystal Effects for super staying power.

The greeting is from the new Sweet Essentials stamp set - an absolute favorite of mine from the new Stampin' Up! Catalog. The eight sentiments cover the most popular cardmaking occasions and the font is fresh and modern. Love it!

What's your favorite?
I'd love to know your favorite Stampin' Up! greeting set. (Yes, I'm nosey I'm conducting research.)  Is it one of the ten new greeting stamp sets introduced in the Annual Catalog? Or is your favorite a set that's been around a while? Please let me know in the comments - I'd love to hear from you!

Happy You - Friend Card

Friend Card - Happy You Stamp Set by Stampin' Up!

Cheer up a friend with a cute friend card - this one is courtesy of the fun Happy You Stamp Set from the new Stampin' Up! Annual Catalog (Hostess Collection).

I fell for this stamp set right away - the images are adorable, they can be colored (or not), and their size makes them super easy to crop with many of our punches and dies. Plus, it's a great all occassion stamp set - perfect for beginning stampers and savvy shoppers looking for value and versatility.

Taking my cue from the little rain boot, I punched circles and randomly adhered them to my card base for an interesting tone-on-tone background. Next I embossed polka dots on the Summer Starfruit panel that was die-cut using the scallop border from the Adorning Accents Edgelits.

The strip of patterned paper is from the sweet new Comfort Cafe Designer Series Paper collection. Hard to see in the photos, but this pattern features a subtle "stitched look".

Watercolored focal image for Happy You Friend Card

Behind the focal image, I created my own scallop circle by layering two "flowers" cropped with the Fancy Flower punch; the perfect size for my (1-3/4" circle) punched image.

This is a really fun set, available with your free hostess dollars when your stamping party reaches $150 or with online orders of $150 or more (called Stampin' Rewards online).

Happy Birthday Make A Cake

Happy Birthday Handmade Greeting Card

Whip up a virtual birthday cake in no time with the new Make a Cake stamp set! This fun and versatile set has cute elements to create lots of cakes for any occasion. Pair it with any greeting from wedding to birthday, shower to congrats and you have an instant party theme for your cards, invites, pages and projects.

I've paired the stamp set with the Pennant Builder Wheel (using the spacers to accommodate just one wheel on the spindle), to tie in with the pennant banner on the cake.

The happy birthday greeting is from the new Itty Bitty Banners stamp set and coordinates with the Bitty Banner Framelits (Big Shot) die set. I love how easy it is to create the perfect little banners using this coordinating system.

Itty Bitty Banners Stamp Set with Bitty Banners Framelits Die
Itty Bitty Banners Stamp Set and Bitty Banners Framelits Die

The sweet patterned paper (tiny hearts!) is part of the Patio Party Designer Series Paper collection. I simply folded my strip of paper at an angle, then tore it following the fold line - creating just a bit of added texture to my card.

The ribbon, in Primrose Petals - one of the newest Stampin' Up! In Colors, is the new 3/8" Stitched Satin Ribbon and not only is it pretty, it's super soft and so easy to work with. LOVE this ribbon! It's also going to be a great way to dress up a clean and simple card - the contrasting stitching on the ribbon will add a little pop of wow!

Everything Will Be Okay

Greeting Card with Apothecary Art Stamp Set by Stampin' Up!

What a busy week it's been since the debut of the new Stampin' Up! Annual Catalog + two special promotions! Whew!! While waiting for my order of new Stampin' Up! supplies (hello? man in brown? please hurry!), I created this card of encouragement using the beautiful Apothecary Art stamp set. I'm so thrilled this set carried over to the catalog.

I loved this color combination: Calypso Coral, Crumb Cake, and Chocolate Chip (also used: Wild Wasabi). You'll probably see these colors paired up again soon.

The floral image was stamped on Watercolor Paper (using Jet Black StazOn Ink) and I used a combination of Stampin' Write Markers and Classic Ink Pads and the Aqua Painter to accomplish the watercoloring. I used the markers first to color the darker shaded areas, then simply filled in the remaining areas using the Aqua Painter and lightly blended.

HIP TIP: Create a "pool" of ink to dip your Aqua Painter into by squeezing the closed ink pad. The ink pad will touch the lid, depositing wet ink where you'll easily be able to pick it up with the Aqua Painter. With the new Firm Foam pads squeeze lightly! The older felt pads take several firm squeezes.

Apothecary Art Stamp Set With Labels Collection Framelit Dies

The encouraging sentiment is from the Pursuit of Happiness stamp set and was stamped within the center banner, hand cut and popped up using Dimensionals. Speaking of hand cut, I must admit that while the coordinating Labels Collection Framelits will die-cut the images from this stamp set, I hand cut the main image to achieve this particular design. It's totally not necessary to do that, but I was being fussy!

New Stampin' Up! 2012-2014 In Color Collection

Vintage Look Greeting Card Featuring New Stampin' Up! In Colors
New Stampin' Up! 2012-2014 In Color Collection: (l-r) Summer Starfruit, Gumball Green,
Midnight Muse, Raspberry Ripple, Primrose Petals.

With the release of the new Stampin' Up! 2012-2013 Annual Catalog last Friday, a new palette of colors were introduced as the 2012-2014 In Color Collection.  Each year, Stampin' Up! reveals a new collection of five trendy, fresh colors in conjunction with their four core color collections. The In Color Collections have a lifespan of two years, with a new collection being introduced each year allowing for a continuous infusion of fresh color inspiration.

The five new 2012-2014 In Colors are: Summer Starfruit, Gumball Green, Midnight Muse, Raspberry Ripple, and Primrose Petals.  Coordinating products in this new color collection include Classic Stampin' Pads & Ink Refills, card stock, Stampin' Write Markers, Designer Series Paper Stacks, Dahlia Flower Adornments, and Stitched Satin Ribbon.

In addition, many of the new patterned paper collections and Simply Scrappin' Kits feature one or more of the new In Colors as well.  The new palette of colors fall right in line with the continued vintage trend in paper crafting.

Focal Image With Apothecary Accents Frame

Speaking of vintage . . . notice the frame behind the flower image?  It's one of the new die-cut accent shapes included in the Apothecary Accents Framelits Collection. While these Framelits do coordinate with the new Layered Labels Stamp Set, they can, of course, be used on their own in a variety of ways. The piece I used for today's card was cut in half and spread out before being layered behind the flower.

My favorite new In Color?
So far it's Midnight Muse - a gorgeous deep indigo blue - which happens to be one of the trendiest fashion colors right now too!  Of course as I start creating and experimenting with each of the new In Colors, I usually find that one of the other colors winds up on my craft table more and more often. To be continued . . .
